Connor McDavid scored 50 seconds into the game on a coast to coast rush and the Edmonton Oilers beat the New York Rangers 4-1 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, November 1, 2026. Colton Dach scored twice, Evan Bouchard had a goal and two assists, and Matt Tomkins made 28 saves in his Oilers debut as Edmonton won its seventh straight road game.
McDavid took a pass from Bouchard in the neutral zone, banked the puck off the boards to himself, skated around defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov and lifted his ninth goal of the season over rookie goaltender Dylan Garand. The goal was the 418th of McDavid's career, moving him past Glenn Anderson into fourth place on the franchise list. It was also his eighth career goal in the opening minute, breaking a tie with Mark Messier for the most in team history.
Dach made it 2-0 at 6:19 of the first period, turning in the right circle and shooting through two defenders and past Garand, who stopped 21 shots. Bouchard had a goal waved off for goaltender interference in the first period, then scored on the power play at 9:49 of the second, taking a feed from Leon Draisaitl after McDavid started the play.
The assist on Bouchard's goal was McDavid's 30th of the season. He reached 30 assists faster than any player in NHL history and extended his league record season opening assist streak to 15 games. His point streak is also 15 games. McDavid leads the NHL with 39 points on nine goals and 30 assists, and the next two names on the scoring list are his teammates: Draisaitl with 28 points and Bouchard with 26.
Pavel Dorofeyev scored the only Rangers goal at 13:22 of the second period, cutting to the crease and jamming in a rebound for his fourth goal in 15 games. Scott Morrow and Mika Zibanejad had the assists. New York got no closer. Dach scored into an empty net late in the third period to finish his first career two goal game. He has three goals and an assist in his last four games.
Why the road streak matters
Edmonton is 7-0-0 on the road and 11-2-2 overall. The seven straight road wins to open the season match the 1983-84 Oilers for the best road start in franchise history. Sunday was the second night of a back to back, and the win came with a 32 year old goaltender making his first NHL appearance in more than two and a half years. Tomkins stopped Zibanejad in the opening seconds to set up McDavid's goal the other way, and he protected a two goal lead through a scoreless third period to earn his first win with the club.
Rangers slide to four straight losses
The Rangers have lost four in a row and are 1-5-1 in their last seven games. They fell behind by two goals in the first period for the third straight game, managed five shots in the first period, and took penalties that handed Edmonton a two man advantage in the third. Starting goaltender Igor Shesterkin was out, and Garand faced the league's top three scorers in his place. Captain J.T. Miller slammed his stick on the boards in frustration during the third period. New York stays home to play the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night.
