Kathmandu Gorkhas beat Karnali Yaks by four wickets at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Monday, November 2, chasing down a target of 181 with two balls to spare for their first win of the Nepal Premier League season.
Kathmandu captain Karan KC won the toss and chose to field. Karnali posted 180 for six in their 20 overs, led by opener Ariful Islam with 44 and Hussain Talat with 40. Pawan Sarraf finished unbeaten on 30 and Gulshan Jha added 20. Karan KC took two wickets for Kathmandu, while Shahab Alam, Jahandad Khan, Dev Shah and Santosh Yadav took one each.
Karan KC finishes the chase he started
The chase turned on two innings. Rashid Khan made 50 off 34 balls, with three fours and two sixes, and Karan KC then hit 44 off 20 balls to be named player of the match. Jahandad Khan added 22 off 10 balls and Santosh Yadav was unbeaten on five as Kathmandu reached 181 for six in 19.4 overs.
The result gives Kathmandu their first two points of the season, after an opening loss to Janakpur Bolts. Karnali stay on four points after a first defeat, having won their opening two matches of the third NPL season.
The league runs at Kirtipur until November 21, with eight teams playing 32 matches at the one venue.
Why the win matters for both sides
The form lines crossed in an odd way on Monday. Karnali had already beaten Janakpur Bolts by 19 runs in this tournament, and Janakpur had beaten Kathmandu in Kathmandu's opening match, so the Gorkhas arrived as the side still looking for a first point. Instead they chased the biggest total of the day with two balls to spare, at the ground that is also their home venue for the season.
Karnali remain near the top of the table despite the defeat. The Kantipur Max league table after the match showed Karnali with four points from three games, two wins and one loss, and a net run rate of plus 0.295. Kathmandu's two points move them off the bottom of the early standings and keep all eight teams within reach of the playoff places with most of the league stage still to play.
The match was the 10th of the season. The Nepal Premier League's third season runs from October 26 to November 21, with every match at the Tribhuvan University ground.
