The Dallas Mavericks go into Monday's home game against the Sacramento Kings without knowing whether Kyrie Irving will play. Dallas listed the guard as questionable on the NBA injury report released Sunday, November 1, with the reason given as left knee injury management. Tipoff at American Airlines Center in Dallas is at 8 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. CT.

The listing is about management, not a new injury. Irving tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Sacramento on March 3, 2025, and did not return to regular season action until this season. Dallas has managed the knee since opening night. Irving sat out the October 24 game against San Antonio, the second night of a back to back, and he was also listed as questionable before the October 28 game against Oklahoma City, then played.

The game he is trying to back up

On Friday, October 30, Irving scored 35 points with nine assists in a 116-111 win over the Houston Rockets, scoring 16 of those points in the fourth quarter. It was his highest scoring game since the knee injury. Cooper Flagg added 33 points in the same game. Through five games this season Irving is averaging 21.4 points.

Center Daniel Gafford, who watched the long recovery at close range, put the wait plainly after the Houston game. "Seeing him out for, what, how long was he out? 19 months. Too long for a guy like Kai," Gafford said.

Dallas is 4-2 after three straight wins, and Monday's game closes a three game homestand before a trip to San Antonio on Wednesday. Sacramento is 0-6. The rest of the Dallas report lists Santi Aldama as doubtful, Dereck Lively II as out after surgery, and Caleb Martin as available with a splint on his right thumb. For Sacramento, Zach LaVine is questionable with right elbow inflammation.

What Sacramento brings

The Kings arrive winless and with a question of their own. Guard Zach LaVine scored 11 points in 21 minutes in Sacramento's last game before leaving with the elbow problem that now has him listed as questionable. Forward Keegan Murray is out. The matchup also carries an odd symmetry for Irving: the Kings are the team he was playing when he tore the ligament in March 2025, and they are the team on the other bench for the first game in which his availability has been in doubt since his 35 point return to form.

Dallas does have cover if Irving sits. Flagg's 33 points against Houston came with nine rebounds and six assists, and Daniel Gafford added 18 points on six of seven shooting in that game, so the Mavericks' scoring does not rest on one guard. The decision on Irving is expected closer to tipoff, once the team sees how the knee responds on game day.
