Two men were shot and killed early on Sunday, November 1, outside OJ's Game Over Bar on 151st Street in East Chicago, Indiana, in a burst of gunfire that police say topped 30 rounds and left bullet holes in nearby homes and cars.
The men were 20 and 36 years old, and both had been shot multiple times. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to Powers Health St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where he also died, CBS 2 Chicago reported.
How police found the shooting
East Chicago police said ShotSpotter gunshot detection picked up dozens of shots shortly before 2 a.m. near the bar, and NBC 5 Chicago reported that officers responded at about 1:48 a.m. Officers who arrived outside the bar found the two men down with multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators recovered two semiautomatic handguns lying on the ground beside the victims, police said. Bullet holes were visible in vehicles parked near the bar and in homes on the residential block. Police have not said who fired the shots, and they have not identified a motive for the shooting.
A neighbor ran out to help
Audrey DeAvila, who lives behind the bar, said she heard the gunfire and ran outside before officers arrived. She said she and another woman tried to stop the bleeding and performed CPR on one of the wounded men while they waited for help to reach the street.
"It was uncalled for, it was unnecessary and it was so wasteful," DeAvila said.
Police Chief Jose Rivera said the gunfire put the whole block at risk. "No respect was given. That's a residential area. Several vehicles. Several homes," Rivera said, pointing to the homes and cars that the rounds struck on the street.
What investigators are doing now
No arrests had been announced by Monday morning, and the reports carried by Chicago and Northwest Indiana outlets did not name the two men who were killed. The Joint Agency Homicide Task Force has taken up the investigation alongside East Chicago police.
Investigators are asking residents near 151st Street to check their home security cameras for footage from early Sunday and to share anything that could help identify who fired. ABC 7 Chicago reported that officials gave an update on the double fatal shooting on Sunday as the task force work continued.
Two men, one of them 20 years old, are dead after more than 30 shots on a residential street, and as of Monday morning police had not said who pulled the triggers or why.
