Tampa police are searching for a driver who fled a traffic stop on Halloween night and then crashed into three vehicles, killing a rear seat passenger and injuring two other people, the Tampa Police Department said in an official release on Sunday, November 1. The driver ran from the scene on foot and had not been identified in the accounts police released on Sunday.
The traffic stop and the crash
At about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, officers tried to stop the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche near 13th Street and 28th Avenue, in the Ybor City area, police said. The driver fled, and officers did not pursue the vehicle.
The driver continued east on East 28th Avenue and struck two unoccupied vehicles. The driver then ran a stop sign and crashed into a 2019 Nissan Pathfinder. The impact sent the Pathfinder into a pole, police said.
After the crash, the driver of the Avalanche got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene.
The people in the Pathfinder
Three adults were inside the Pathfinder at the time of the crash, police said. Two of them suffered injuries that were not life threatening and were taken to a hospital, where they were last listed in stable condition.
A passenger in the rear seat died from their injuries, police said. Police have not released the name of the person who died or the names of the two injured adults, and they have not released a description or the identity of the driver who ran from the Avalanche.
The search
Detectives are following leads to identify the driver and are asking for the public's help, police said. Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest is asked to call Tampa police at 813-213-6130 and reference case number 26-641095.
The investigation remains active, and police said additional information can be provided as the investigation allows. The official city release was posted on November 1 and updated that afternoon, and Tampa Bay 28 and FOX 13 carried the same police account on Sunday.
East 28th Avenue runs through the Ybor City area on the east side of Tampa, in Hillsborough County. The crash happened late on Halloween night, when the streets around Ybor City are usually busy, and it left one family with a death to explain and detectives with a driver to find.
