A missile attack on Kyiv just before 11 p.m. on Thursday killed one person, the capital's military administration said, Reuters reported in a later dispatch, raising the confirmed toll from Thursday's strikes across Ukraine to at least 20. Another attack on Dnipro hit a student dormitory and set it ablaze, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said, and he said a day of assaults had cut power to 350,000 households in the city. Russian drones also struck city buses in three separate attacks on Zaporizhzhia, wounding six people, officials there said. President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Ukraine had intelligence about preparations for new Russian ballistic missile strikes, and The Kyiv Independent reported that he said Russia has launched more than 100 ballistic missiles against Kyiv and the surrounding region since October 14.
Update: Death toll rises to 14 as strikes across Ukraine kill at least 19
Updated 15:03 UTC, Oct. 29, 2026. Officials raised the death toll from the drone strike on the main railway station in Dnipro to at least 14 people, Reuters reported in an updated dispatch, and CNN reported the same toll. Another 10 people were wounded at the station, CNN said. The Times reported that more than a dozen people were injured at the station, six of them seriously.
Across Ukraine, at least 19 people were killed in Russian strikes on Thursday, Reuters and CNN reported. Two 15-year-old girls were killed on a central street in Chernihiv, where 23 people were also wounded, and three people were killed in a strike on an apartment building in Kremenchuk, where 15 people were wounded, Reuters reported.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergiy Koretskyi said on Telegram: "Russia is deliberately hunting civilians: on trains, at stations, in residential buildings." He added: "There is no justification for this terror, and there never can be." President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes were deliberate attacks on civilians carried out while a humanitarian operation was under way at Oleshky, in the Kherson region, where Kyiv and Moscow have observed a local truce since Tuesday. Reuters said Moscow had made clear that the six-day humanitarian truce applied only to the Kherson region. The Times described the Dnipro strike as the deadliest attack on a railway station since 2022.
A Russian drone hit the main railway station in Dnipro, in central Ukraine, on Thursday morning, October 29, killing 13 people on a platform crowded with passengers, officials said. The drone struck as a commuter train was preparing to leave for Zaporizhzhia, the city to the south, according to Ukrzaliznytsia, the state rail company.
Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed the death toll in a post on Telegram and said at least five more people had been wounded. Medical teams were treating the wounded, and rescuers and law enforcement officers were working at the scene, regional officials and the rail company said.
What officials said happened
Ukrzaliznytsia said a jet-powered drone hit the platform where train No. 866, travelling from Dnipro to Zaporizhzhia, was standing with people boarding. "Despite a warning of heightened danger, people were on the platform," the company said, adding that rescuers were on the scene.
Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov said a passenger train had been hit. "A tragedy has occurred in Dnipro. A drone struck a passenger electric train," Filatov said on social media shortly after the attack. "Many people were killed. Many others were injured." In a Telegram post reported by Reuters, he wrote: "Many people were killed. Lots were injured."
Hanzha had first reported an attack on transport infrastructure in the city, with emergency services rushing to the scene, before he confirmed the toll of 13 dead. CNN, reporting the same attack on Thursday morning, said medical teams were at the station providing care and assistance, and described the story as still developing.
A rail network under repeated attack
The station strike came a day after Reuters reported how hard Ukraine's rail network has been hit during the war. Ukrzaliznytsia says Russia has attacked more than 1,700 rail facilities this year, including stations, locomotives and passenger wagons. Russia says its targets are objects used by Kyiv's military.
Kyiv has set new rules for rail passengers during air-raid alerts, Reuters reported in the same account, and one return trip between Dnipro and Odesa involved nine evacuations in total while alerts were checked. Thursday's strike was different in kind: the drone reached the platform itself, at the moment passengers were boarding.
Dnipro is one of eastern Ukraine's largest rail hubs, and its main station handles trains to Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.
This is a developing story. The Orbit Post will update this article in place if the toll or the official account of the strike changes.
