A six-year-old girl attacked inside a government school in Panchkula, Haryana on October 28 is stable and out of danger at PGIMER in Chandigarh, and the school is now at the centre of a police case, staff suspensions and a child rights inquiry. Both children involved are minors. Their names are not published here.
The girl, a kindergarten student, was allegedly attacked by a third grade student inside the school premises on October 28. She was first taken to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6 and then referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh. Her family says she suffered serious injuries, including facial fractures, and that she was found unconscious some time after the attack. Reports in The Tribune, cited in later coverage, say she remains in hospital, stable and out of danger.
Suspensions and the police case
The Haryana Education Department suspended two junior basic training teachers, named in ANI reporting as Simranjeet Kaur and Pooja Rani, with immediate effect. Later coverage reported that the school's principal has also been suspended. Police have registered a case against the school management for alleged negligence, under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Aditi Singh said.
The eight-year-old boy accused in the case was sent to an observation home in Ambala under an October 31 order of the Panchkula Juvenile Justice Board. The board set its next hearing for November 4. No motive for the attack has been established.
The questions the inquiry must answer
The Haryana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken note of the case on its own and has asked the District Education Officer in Panchkula for a point by point factual report on what action the department has taken. The family's account raises supervision questions that the report will have to answer: how a small child could be missing and hurt inside the school without staff noticing, and how the school's closed circuit cameras were being watched that afternoon.
Indian Express reporting, carried in summaries of the case, says the state has ordered a wider school safety audit after the attack. That claim is still being verified against a government order, and this article does not treat the audit as confirmed until the order itself is published.
Why it matters
The case is not only about one school. It tests the basics that parents assume when they send a five or six year old to a government school: a teacher in the room, a gate that is watched, and an adult who notices at once when a child is gone. The Juvenile Justice Board hearing on November 4 and the child rights commissions report are the next two public steps.
