India's NSE International Exchange, known as NSEIX, has extended its trading day to 23 hours and 30 minutes, the exchange said on Tuesday, November 3. The longer session took effect on November 2 and is aimed at broadening access for overseas investors.
Trading now runs from 3:15 a.m. Indian Standard Time to 2:45 a.m. the following day. That single window reaches across Asian, European and US market hours, so a participant in GIFT City can react to moves in all three regions without waiting for a local open.
A benchmark claim from GIFT City
NSEIX said the launch sets a new global benchmark, providing a continuous market for nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week, to market participants. The exchange said the move strengthens the role of GIFT City as an international financial centre connecting India with global capital markets.
V. Balasubramaniam, the managing director and chief executive of NSE International Exchange, said in a statement carried by Reuters: "By enabling market access across all time zones, we are providing participants with greater flexibility and strengthening GIFT City's connectivity with global financial markets."
In a second statement reported by Upstox, Balasubramaniam said: "The extension to 23.5-hour trading at NSEIX is an important milestone in our endeavour to create a globally accessible marketplace from GIFT City."
What the exchange is
NSE International Exchange was set up in 2017 in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, known as GIFT City. It is regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority. The exchange offers stock, index and currency derivatives, depository receipts and global stocks.
Running a market for 23 and a half hours leaves very little time to fix anything that breaks. The exchange addressed that point directly: it said its systems can complete maintenance within 3 minutes between sessions and in less than 15 minutes at the end of the day.
Why exchanges keep stretching the day
Global investors trade news as it happens, and news does not respect one country's clock. Earnings in New York, a central bank decision in Europe or a selloff in Asia can all land while a shorter exchange session is closed, leaving its participants to react hours later at the next open. A near 24 hour session removes most of that gap for the products NSEIX lists.
For GIFT City, the change is also a statement of intent. The centre is competing for international order flow, and a trading day that covers the working hours of three continents is a concrete offer to overseas firms deciding where to book their India linked business. Whether volumes follow the longer hours will be the test that matters, and the exchange has now set its systems up to find out.
