Key points

  • The Indian Navy has rescued all 20 crew members of the Iranian fishing vessel Azini in a coordinated operation in the Arabian Sea, ending a hijacking that began on October 29.
  • The Azini was seized by Somali pirates on October 29.
  • The operation ran for 48 hours.

The Indian Navy has rescued all 20 crew members of the Iranian fishing vessel Azini in a coordinated operation in the Arabian Sea, ending a hijacking that began on October 29. The rescue was completed on November 2, more than 3,000 km from Mumbai, and Iran has publicly thanked India for the mission.

The Azini was seized by Somali pirates on October 29. In its statement, the Indian Navy said the hijacking was a significant maritime security threat because the captured vessel could have been used as a mother ship, a base from which pirates could launch further attacks on merchant shipping in the region.

A 48 hour operation far from home

The operation ran for 48 hours. The Navy located the vessel, intercepted it and secured the safe release of every crew member from heavily armed pirates, with support from the Indian Air Force. All 20 crew members are Iranian nationals, and the sources reporting the rescue carried no report of casualties among them.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Navy for what he called a meticulously coordinated 48 hour operation, carried out on November 2. In his post on X, Singh wrote: "My congratulations to #Indian Navy for successfully executing a meticulously coordinated 48-hour operation to rescue all 20 crew members of the pirated fishing vessel, Azini, more than 3000 km from Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, on 02 Nov 26."

Tehran thanks New Delhi

Iran's Embassy in New Delhi thanked the Government of India, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force on Tuesday, November 3. In its statement on X, the embassy said: "The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi expresses its sincere appreciation to the Government of India, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force for their successful operation to rescue the 20 Iranian crew members of the fishing vessel Azini from pirates."

The embassy added: "We highly commend the professionalism, courage and effective coordination demonstrated by the Indian Armed Forces, reflecting India's strong commitment to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and its role in saving lives beyond borders."

Why the rescue mattered

A hijacked fishing vessel is a danger well beyond its own crew. Left in pirate hands, a boat like the Azini can range far from shore, carry armed men and supplies, and serve as the launch point for attacks on much larger commercial ships. By locating and intercepting the vessel before that could happen, the Navy removed both a crew in danger and a tool for further attacks.

The rescue also underlines the distance at which the Indian Navy now operates. The interception happened more than 3,000 km from Mumbai, and it took two services working together, naval ships at sea and Air Force support, to find the vessel, contain it and free the crew without a reported casualty.

For the 20 Iranian fishermen, the outcome is simple: a voyage that began with a pirate seizure on October 29 ended on November 2 with every man released, and with a public thank you from their own embassy to the forces that freed them.
