Britain's government set out around 600 million pounds (800 million dollars) of funding on Saturday, October 24, 2026, largely geared towards defending against health and security threats from artificial intelligence, Reuters reported. Sky News also reported the pledge of 600 million pounds to defend the public against threats to health and security from AI.

This is a funding announcement, not money already spent. The government set out where the money will go, and Sky News reported that Chancellor John Healey announced the biosecurity lab and will unveil more details in the budget next week.

Where the biggest share goes

The biggest chunk of the funding will go to a new biosecurity initiative. It includes 100 million pounds for a laboratory using AI to detect biological threats, and 65 million pounds to develop countermeasures against pathogens.

Tech companies OpenAI and Anthropic will offer up to 200 million pounds of model credits to the biosecurity initiative. Google DeepMind and the London based AI life sciences startup Basecamp Research will offer other assistance.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan described the aim for the AI Biosecurity Lab to become a major global institution "bringing together world-leading scientific expertise to protect people from emerging biological threats," Reuters reported.

Cyber defences and the wider package

The government's AI Security Institute will get an extra 120 million pounds. Another 130 million pounds will go towards new projects to improve cyber defences for critical infrastructure and the wider economy, known as the National Cyber Shield and the National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre. Britain's National Cyber Security Centre will receive an unspecified sum to expand in Manchester.

The rest of the package is spread across industry and research. A fund of 60 million pounds will invest in British companies using AI to advance robotics, autonomous systems and manufacturing, and 60 million pounds will be used for AI research and procurement contracts. An extra 23 million pounds will go to research on the economic impact of AI, 18 million pounds will go to a new chip design academy, 15 million pounds will fund a prize for AI solutions to public policy problems initially focused on healthcare, and 30 million pounds will go to regional mayors to support local AI work.

Read as a whole, the package puts the largest single items on defence against biological and cyber threats, with smaller sums spread across industry, skills and research. The company support for the biosecurity work comes as model credits and other assistance rather than as part of the government's own 600 million pounds. The full detail, on Sky News reporting, comes in the budget next week, when Healey unveils more of the plan.
