Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday, beating The Puma by 1 3/4 lengths in the final race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships. The 4-year-old covered 1 1/4 miles on a fast dirt track in 2:00.36 under jockey Junior Alvarado, earning the $3.64 million winner's share of the purse for owner and breeder Godolphin.

The win closed the two-day meeting at the Lexington track with the result the crowd had come to see. Sovereignty, the 2025 Kentucky Derby winner and reigning Horse of the Year, was sent off at 5-2 from post two. The Puma, the Pennsylvania Derby winner trained by Gustavo Delgado and ridden by Javier Castellano, finished second. Knightsbridge took third, which gave trainer Bill Mott the first and third finishers in the richest race of the weekend.

Mott takes first and third

Mott trained both Sovereignty and Knightsbridge for Godolphin, and the pair filled two of the first three places. Knightsbridge, the Pacific Classic winner ridden by Luis Saez, held third ahead of the rest of a field reduced to seven runners when Magnitude was scratched before the race.

Defending champion Forever Young finished fifth. The Japanese star had been trying to join Tiznow as the only horse to win the Classic in consecutive years, and he arrived off a win in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. This time the race belonged to the home team, and to a horse who had waited a year for his chance at it.

The chance he missed a year ago

Sovereignty won the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont Stakes and the Travers Stakes in 2025 and was named Horse of the Year, but he missed last year's Classic after spiking a fever in the days before the race. His 2026 season was shorter and bumpier. He finished second in the Oaklawn Handicap and third in the Stephen Foster, then won the Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on August 8. A foot abscess then ruled him out of the September 18 Jockey Club Gold Cup, the planned first meeting with Forever Young.

Mott kept him aimed at Keeneland, and before the race he sounded calm about the colt. "He's over there sleeping. He's lying down. He's relaxed. He's not nervous like me. All the reports are good," Mott said. Saturday's win took Sovereignty's career record to 8 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third from 13 starts.

A title settled, and a farewell

The Classic also settled the Horse of the Year argument on the track. Sovereignty went into the race leading Forever Young by a single point in the standings, 253 to 252, and he beat his rival head to head with the championship on the line.

It was also a farewell. Darley America announced on October 14 that Sovereignty and Knightsbridge will both retire to stand at Jonabell Farm next year, so the Classic was the final start of Sovereignty's career. He leaves racing as a Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Travers, Whitney and Breeders' Cup Classic winner, and as the horse who gave Godolphin and Mott the Classic a year after illness kept him out of it.
