The Utah Jazz never recovered from the first quarter on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City. Portland opened the game with a 17 to 0 run, held Utah scoreless for nearly six minutes, and rolled to a 112 to 90 win at the Delta Center, handing the Jazz a fourth straight loss.

Deni Avdija scored 24 points and Damian Lillard added 22 for the Trail Blazers, who improved to 4 and 1 and bounced back from their first loss of the season, a defeat against Memphis on Thursday. Toumani Camara, Scoot Henderson and Jrue Holiday each scored 14 points.

A first quarter that decided it

Portland's opening run set the terms for the whole afternoon. Holiday's free throws gave the Blazers a 23 to 7 lead with 3:29 left in the first quarter, and Utah's two main scorers could not buy a basket early. Lauri Markkanen, back after missing two games with a sprained wrist, and Keyonte George combined to miss their first nine shots. George, Utah's leading scorer at 24.4 points a game, finished with eight points.

Avdija did most of his damage before halftime. He scored 19 points in the first half and went 10 for 11 from the free throw line in that span, sending Portland into the break ahead 59 to 42. Utah never challenged in the second half, and the Blazers led by 26 points in the third quarter and by as many as 28 overall.

Turnovers and cold shooting sink Utah

The Jazz shot 37.1 percent, their lowest mark of the season, and finished under 103 points for the first time this season. Rookie Darryn Peterson led Utah with 16 points. Markkanen scored 13 on 3 for 14 shooting, and Brice Sensabaugh added 12.

Turnovers hurt Utah again. The Jazz gave the ball away 20 times, and Portland turned one third quarter stretch of four straight Utah turnovers into separation the home team never closed. Portland also won the rebounding battle 48 to 37 and won despite a thin backcourt, with Ja Morant out until at least late November with a strained hamstring and Shaedon Sharpe out until the spring after knee surgery.

Utah fell to a fourth straight defeat. Portland visits the Denver Nuggets on Monday night, and the Jazz visit the San Antonio Spurs the same night, still looking for the scoring form that carried them through the opening week.
