A University of Colorado Boulder student, 19, was killed and a second student was critically injured in a shooting at a house party in Boulder's University Hill neighborhood late on Halloween night, Boulder police said.

The shooting happened near 7th Street and Marine Street, in the blocks of student houses just west of the CU campus. Police said two people were shot in the area late Friday night, around midnight, as Halloween gatherings were still going on across the neighborhood.

One student dead, one in critical condition

In an update on Sunday, police said the 19-year-old man had died and the second student was in critical condition, FOX 31 KDVR reported. Both of the people shot were CU Boulder students, according to the police account carried by the station. Police have not released the name of the student who died or the name of the student who survived.

Police have not said what led up to the gunfire, whether the shooter knew the two students, or how many shots were fired. No description of a suspect has been released in the reports so far.

Suspect still being sought

Boulder police kept a presence at the intersection after the shooting, and the crossing at 7th and Marine was closed to traffic while officers worked the scene, according to reports summarizing the department's statements. As of the latest update, no arrests had been made.

The department has asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact Boulder Police Dispatch. Investigators have not said whether video from the party or from nearby houses has been collected, and they have not announced any weapon recovery.

A student neighborhood on its busiest night

University Hill, known locally as the Hill, is the neighborhood directly beside the university, a grid of older houses and apartments where a large share of CU students live. Halloween night is one of the busiest nights of the year there, with parties running late into the night on most blocks.

That setting is part of why the shooting has drawn such a strong response in Boulder. A party shooting that leaves one student dead and another fighting for his life, with no one in custody, is the kind of case the university community will follow closely in the days ahead.

Police said the investigation is continuing. Anyone who was at or near the party, or who saw anything around 7th Street and Marine Street late on Halloween night, is being asked to call Boulder police.
