A barricaded suspect was taken into custody on Monday morning after a SWAT standoff at a home near Lithonia High School in DeKalb County, Georgia, that put the school on lockdown and blocked roads in the area, Atlanta television stations reported.
The standoff on Victoria Place
A person with a gun was reportedly barricaded inside a home on Victoria Place early on Monday as SWAT officers moved in, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. A FOX 5 reporter at the scene counted about a dozen police vehicles, including SWAT vehicles, and said officers used a loudspeaker at intervals to give instructions to the person inside.
At about 6:50 a.m., the reporter saw a SWAT vehicle breach the home through the garage, followed by officers entering the house. A loud noise, possibly a flashbang, was heard at about 7 a.m., and two officers carrying riot shields were later seen entering the home. In its first report, FOX 5 said it was not yet known whether a person had been safely removed from the home or whether anyone was injured, and that the person's identity and the circumstances leading to the standoff had not been provided.
Atlanta News First later reported, in the headline of its video report from the scene, that the barricaded suspect was in custody near the school.
Roads blocked and the school on lockdown
WSB-TV reported that the barricaded suspect investigation blocked a busy road in the area. Channel 2 reporter Steve Gehlbach spotted multiple police vehicles along Marbut Road, not far from Lithonia High School, and the station reported the school was on lockdown as the investigation went on. The WSB item was posted at 9:11 a.m. Eastern on Monday, November 2.
Police have not released the name of the person taken into custody, and the reports read on Monday morning carried no confirmed word of injuries in the standoff.
A second major DeKalb police response in two days
The standoff came a day after two DeKalb County police officers were shot on Sunday evening, November 1, while answering a domestic call at an apartment complex on Bouldercrest Road in southeast Atlanta. Both officers were taken to a hospital in stable condition, and the man police say shot them was taken into custody after running into a wooded area near the complex. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating that shooting.
