Eight people were shot early Sunday in Bloomington, Illinois, in a residential block near the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. A 19-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and another woman was taken to a regional trauma center in critical condition, Bloomington police said.

Officers were called to the 100 block of East Division Street at about 1:23 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, after several shots were reported, police spokesman Bryce Janssen said. Officers found the victims when they arrived. The McLean County Coroner's Office pronounced the 19-year-old woman dead at the scene. Her name has not been released, pending notification of her family, and an autopsy is pending.

Students among the wounded

Six other people were shot and suffered injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening. Two of them are Illinois Wesleyan University students, university spokeswoman Olivia Jacobs said. One Illinois State University student was also injured, was treated at a hospital and released, Illinois State University police said. Quincy Current reported that a member of the Quincy University women's basketball team was among the injured. Her name and condition were not published.

Police activity on Sunday centered on a cluster of houses near East and Division streets, across East Street from the university's baseball stadium, WGLT reported. The Illinois State Police and the McLean County Sheriff's Office helped Bloomington police with the crime scene.

No suspect in custody

Police said the early investigation points to an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. No one is in custody, and police have released no suspect information. Officers asked anyone who was in the area, or who lives nearby, to check photos, video and any other evidence they may have. The area of interest runs from Center Street to Franklin Avenue and from Emerson Street to Apple Street.

Mayor Dan Brady said the city "extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this morning's shooting" and thanked police, fire and emergency personnel for their response. U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood also offered condolences to the victims and their families, according to Quincy Current.

Second campus-area shooting this year

The shooting is the second this year near a college campus in the Bloomington-Normal area. In March, six people were shot near the Illinois State University campus in Normal, in the 700 block of Franklin Avenue, less than a mile from the East Division Street scene. Police have announced no arrests in Sunday's shooting, and the investigation is ongoing.
