Alexander Zverev Becomes World No. 1 as Musetti Wins in Paris

Key points

  • Alexander Zverev became world No. 1 for the first time in his career on Monday, topping the PIF ATP Rankings at age 29 on the opening day of the Rolex Paris Masters.
  • Zverev sealed the top spot during his run in Vienna last week, where he reached the semi-finals before losing to Alex de Minaur.
  • Lorenzo Musetti earned that meeting the hard way.

Alexander Zverev became world No. 1 for the first time in his career on Monday, topping the PIF ATP Rankings at age 29 on the opening day of the Rolex Paris Masters. The German is the 30th player to hold the top spot since the rankings began in 1973, according to Tennis Majors, and the tournament marked the moment with a ceremony on Court Central.

Zverev sealed the top spot during his run in Vienna last week, where he reached the semi-finals before losing to Alex de Minaur. He had already won the Roland-Garros and US Open titles this season, and he told reporters in Paris that he believes he can compete for all four Grand Slam titles. His first match as No. 1 comes in the second round in Paris, and it will not be a soft opening.

Musetti survives two tiebreaks

Lorenzo Musetti earned that meeting the hard way. The Italian beat Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10) in one hour and 43 minutes, his first win at the Paris Masters since 2022. Hurkacz saved three match points in the second set tiebreak and held two set points of his own before Musetti closed it out on his fourth match point at the end of a tiebreak that ran about 20 minutes, the tournament's official site reported.

Musetti called it one of his best performances on serve. LaPresse reported that the win was his fourth straight victory against a top 30 player, and that the Paris match will be his fifth meeting of 2026 with a top 10 opponent. Musetti arrived in form: he won the Lyon title last week, ending a run of seven lost finals by beating Taylor Fritz.

A debut to remember for Jodar

The other headline from day one belonged to Rafael Jodar. The ninth seed beat Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 6-3 on the day he entered the top 10 for the first time, at age 20, and he was playing his first Paris match as the new world No. 10. France's Luca Van Assche also won his first match at the tournament, beating Mariano Navone 6-3, 7-5 without dropping serve, ranked No. 47.

The Paris Masters is the last Masters 1000 event of the season and the final stop before the ATP Finals in Turin. That is why the early rounds carry extra weight this week: ranking points, Turin places and, in Zverev's case, the first defence of a No. 1 ranking he has chased for years. His campaign starts against a confident Musetti, on a court where the Italian has just shown he can hold his nerve in the longest tiebreak of the day.
