One person is dead and a second person is in custody after a shooting and a three hour standoff in Salt Lake City's Rose Park neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon.

Salt Lake City police responded at about 1:30 p.m. to the area of 800 North and Redwood Road, near the southwest corner of Rose Park. Officers found a person with a gunshot wound. Efforts were made to save that person, but the person died, Detective Michael Ruff of the Salt Lake City Police Department told Gephardt Daily.

A surrender after three hours

A second person retreated from the scene and into an apartment nearby. Police negotiators focused on that person, and the person surrendered after approximately three hours, Gephardt Daily reported. The person was taken into custody.

Ruff said earlier in the response that investigators would not know much until they could speak to the barricaded person. After the surrender, he praised the negotiators and acknowledged their specialized skills. SWAT officers and negotiators were on the scene during the response, and a media staging area was set up at the Lucky parking lot at 700 North, KJZZ reported.

KSL broadcast live from the scene on Tuesday. Its coverage matched the police account on the two central facts: one person had been killed in a shooting, and another person was barricaded inside a home while officers responded.

Redwood Road closed at the scene

Redwood Road remained closed to traffic near the scene after the surrender. Police said the road would reopen when the initial investigation was complete. Drivers in the Rose Park area were left to route around the closure at 800 North while officers worked.

The closure covered the same stretch of Redwood Road where officers first responded at about 1:30 p.m. Police gave no reopening time in the reports published on Tuesday.

What is not known yet

Police had not released the name of the person who died in the reports published on Tuesday, and the reports did not name the person taken into custody. Ruff told Gephardt Daily that investigators would learn more once they could speak to the barricaded person, which means the account of what led to the shooting was still incomplete on Tuesday evening.

Gephardt Daily said it would share additional details as facts are confirmed. The investigation at the scene was still in its initial stage when the road closure was last reported.
