A man was shot and killed on Wednesday evening near 16th Avenue and Buckeye Road in central Phoenix, and homicide detectives are checking reports that a second person may also have been shot, Phoenix police said.

Officers responded at about 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 28 and found an adult man with a gunshot wound near the Pop N' Bottles Liquor store in the 1600 block of West Buckeye Road. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Police taped off the area around the store while detectives worked at the scene.

A possible second victim

Investigators said they received information indicating a possible second shooting victim who has not been identified or located. AZFamily, which had a reporter at the scene, reported the same account from police: detectives were looking into reports of another person shot in the area, and no other victim had been found so far.

That open question is now a central part of the case. If a second person was wounded and left before officers arrived, that person could hold the clearest account of what happened at the corner. Police have not said where the report of a second victim came from, and they have not announced finding anyone else with a gunshot wound from the shooting.

Suspect left in a gold colored sedan

Police described the suspect only as a man who fled the scene in a gold colored sedan after the shooting. No name, age or fuller description of the suspect has been released, and police have not said whether the sedan or the man has been located.

Homicide detectives are investigating. Police said they do not know the motive for the shooting, and no names have been released, including the name of the man who died. FOX 10 Phoenix and AZFamily both reported the police account on Thursday morning, Oct. 29, in the first reports on the case.

What police are asking the public

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. Spanish speakers can call Testigo Silencioso at 480-TESTIGO, which is 480-837-8446. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward, police said.

The corner of 16th Avenue and Buckeye Road is a working commercial stretch south of downtown Phoenix, and the shooting happened in the early evening, when stores in the area are open and the road carries steady traffic. Police have not announced any arrest, and they have not said whether anyone else was hurt beyond the man who died and the possible second victim they are still trying to find.

Until detectives release more, the public record of this case is short: one man dead, one reported second victim still unaccounted for, and a suspect last described leaving in a gold colored sedan. The next confirmed facts, a name, an arrest or the second victim found, will change this story, and police have pointed anyone who saw the shooting to the two tip lines above.
