Three juveniles were seriously injured when a car hit them in Mesa on Halloween night, police said.

Mesa Police responded to a collision between a vehicle and three pedestrians in the area of Crismon and Ray roads on Saturday, October 31. Police described the three as pediatric and adolescent pedestrians and said they believe the juveniles may have been on bikes when they were hit.

All three taken to a trauma center

All three juveniles were taken to a trauma center with serious injuries, Mesa Police told FOX 10 Phoenix. The Mesa Fire Department gave the same early account to 12News: three kids were taken to a hospital with serious injuries after being hit, and they were possibly riding bikes. The collision also appeared in AZ Family's roundup of Valley news on Saturday night, which described several kids seriously injured after being hit by a car in Mesa, matching the police account carried by the other outlets.

Fire crews evaluated the driver at the scene. Police said they do not suspect impairment was a factor in the collision.

What police have not released

Police have not released the names or ages of the three juveniles, and they have not released the identity of the driver. It is not yet known whether the driver will face any charges.

Police also have not said how the collision happened or where exactly in the roadway the juveniles were when they were hit. They have not said whether the three were out trick or treating. No update on the conditions of the three juveniles beyond serious injuries had been released in the local reports published by Sunday morning.

A night when Mesa streets fill with children

The collision happened on Halloween night, when neighborhoods across Mesa fill with children walking from house to house after dark, many of them in costume and many crossing residential streets between parked cars. Crismon Road and Ray Road meet in east Mesa, where subdivisions line both roads and trick or treating traffic shares the streets with regular evening traffic.

Three young riders or walkers ending the night in a trauma center is the kind of Halloween outcome Mesa officers work every year to prevent. For now, the questions that matter to the families involved are the ones police have not yet answered: how the car and the juveniles came to be in the same place at the same time, and how badly the three were hurt.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
