Lansing, Michigan: Will Lawrence Defeats Tom Barrett in the 7th District as the Incumbent Concedes

Key points

  • LANSING, Michigan.
  • The numbers matched the concession.
  • Lawrence built his margin where the district's people are.

LANSING, Michigan. Mid-Michigan has a new member of Congress. Democrat Will Lawrence defeated Republican Representative Tom Barrett in Michigan's 7th Congressional District, a race the Associated Press called on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 4. Barrett had already given the result away himself. He said on X early on Wednesday that he had contacted Lawrence to concede and to congratulate him.

The numbers matched the concession. Unofficial results from the Michigan Secretary of State, reported by the Lansing State Journal, showed Lawrence with 202,657 votes to 189,482 for Barrett, with all precincts counted by midday Wednesday. That is a 51 percent to 48 percent split in a seven county district anchored in Lansing, the state capital. The race was one of the most expensive House contests in the country. The Detroit Free Press, citing the tracking firm AdImpact, put advertising spending at more than 66 million dollars.

Where the race was won

Lawrence built his margin where the district's people are. In Ingham County, home to Lansing, he beat Barrett 88,833 to 40,135, the State Journal reported. He also won Eaton County, narrowly, 26,701 to 25,603. Barrett carried the other five counties, with his best result in Livingston County, 68,191 to 42,771, but those margins were smaller than the hole Ingham County dug for him.

Barrett wrote on Facebook that he called Lawrence after 2 a.m. to offer his concession and congratulations. He said he was disappointed in the outcome but proud of his team and his campaign, and he pointed to the spending lined up against him. Lawrence, for his part, told supporters on Wednesday: "We made history. We flipped the 7th District and the United States House." In a post on X he thanked Barrett for his service, and wrote: "Mid-Michigan, we did this together. From the bottom of my heart, thank you."

A progressive wins a toss-up seat

Lawrence is 36 and a Lansing community organizer. He helped found the climate activist group Sunrise Movement, the Washington Examiner reported, and he ran as a progressive in a district the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rated a toss-up. The Wall Street Journal reported that he won the Democratic primary in August against a former Navy SEAL and a former United States ambassador to Ukraine, with endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and progressive groups, and that he called for a national moratorium on data centers. His campaign also opposed data center development in the district, a live local fight around Lansing.

The seat has changed hands often. Barrett, a former Army officer, won it in 2024 by about four points, in a year when President Donald Trump carried the district by about one point. Before Barrett, Democrat Elissa Slotkin held the seat. She left the House for the United States Senate. A first term Republican losing a seat this close, in a year when his party lost both houses of Congress, will be read in Washington as one more sign of how far the midterm wave ran.

The result is unofficial until county and state canvassers finish their work later in November. The margin, and Barrett's own concession, leave the outcome in no real doubt. Lawrence takes the seat when the new Congress sits in January.
