The Kansas City Current closed the regular season with a 2-0 win at Racing Louisville on Sunday night, scoring both goals on Vanessa DiBernardo corner kicks and locking up a home playoff game.
Kayla Sharples put Kansas City ahead in the 15th minute at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. She tracked a DiBernardo corner into the six yard box and headed it down and into the bottom right corner. It was Sharples's first goal of the season and her first regular season goal since May 2025, the Current said.
A second header settles it
Louisville stayed in the game into the second half, but the same route produced the second goal. In the 59th minute DiBernardo sent another corner to the top of the six yard box, and Haley Hopkins rose over several defenders and headed the ball into the bottom right corner. It was Hopkins's 12th goal of the season, and it came in her 50th appearance for the club. The Current said she is the 15th player in club history to reach 50 appearances.
DiBernardo's two assists gave her 13 assists for the Current in her career, tied with Temwa Chawinga for the second most in club history, the Current said. Both Kansas City goals came from corner kicks, Racing Louisville noted in its recap.
What the win means
The shutout was Kansas City's fifth straight win. The Current finished the regular season 16-9-5 with 53 points and fourth place in the NWSL standings. Racing Louisville finished 7-20-3 with 24 points and 15th place, and its season is over.
Kansas City scored 54 goals this season, the most in the league, a total that trails only the club's own 2024 squad in the NWSL record book, Just Women's Sports reported.
The win secured the No. 4 seed and a home quarterfinal. Kansas City will host fifth seeded Angel City FC on Saturday, Nov. 7 at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The Current listed the start at 11 a.m. CT. The game is on CBS, with a noon ET start in the network listing.
For a Kansas City team that had already locked up a playoff spot before Decision Day, the night still carried a clear job: win in Louisville, keep the home game, and go into the playoffs on a winning run. The Current did all three, and did it with two set piece headers in a road stadium.
