Key points

  • Jocelyn Benson will be Michigan's next governor.
  • Benson defeated Republican U.S. Rep.
  • Benson succeeds Gov.

Jocelyn Benson will be Michigan's next governor. Decision Desk HQ and CNN projected the Democratic secretary of state as the winner on Tuesday night, November 3, 2026, and Fox News also called the race for Benson, reporting that she held 54 percent of the vote when it made its call.

Benson defeated Republican U.S. Rep. John James, who represents suburbs in Macomb and Oakland counties in the district Fox 2 Detroit identifies as Michigan's 9th District. The Associated Press count early on Wednesday, November 4, with an estimated 77.75 percent of the vote counted, put Benson at 2,076,849 votes and James at 1,716,265. The projections are media calls, not certification. Results stay unofficial until counties and the state canvass them.

A hold in Lansing

Benson succeeds Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a fellow Democrat who could not run again because of term limits. Her win keeps the governor's office in Democratic hands for four more years. It also breaks a long Michigan pattern. For decades, voters replaced an outgoing governor with a leader from the other party. Benson is the first winner since 1960 to take an open governor's race for the same party that held the office, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Her running mate is state Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks of Grand Rapids. Michigan has had a woman as governor and a woman as lieutenant governor before, but two women have never held the two jobs at the same time.

The winning pitch

Benson, a Detroit Democrat, has served as Michigan's secretary of state since 2019 and is the state's chief elections officer. She ran on a three-part promise: "Costs down, wages up, end corruption." She pitched herself as a manager who fixed slow government services, pointing to faster vehicle service transactions and to new absentee and early voting systems put in place on her watch. She also pointed to her record resisting efforts by President Donald Trump and his allies to interfere with his 2020 election loss in Michigan, and she called James the president's "yes man."

Her plans include a tax credit for family caregivers, free pre-K for all three-year-olds, a new government body charged with lowering prescription drug prices, energy rules meant to lower electricity bills, higher starting pay for teachers and a new school funding formula meant to close gaps between districts.

James argued for change

James, a Republican from Shelby Township, argued that eight years of Democratic leadership under Whitmer meant voters should put a Republican in charge. He had Trump's endorsement and ran with state Rep. Jay DeBoyer of Clay Township. At the Republican watch party at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit, James stayed upbeat while Benson led all night. "I'll tell you what, people are hungry for change. They're hungry for leadership," he said.

Detroit voter Andrew Henderson, 58, voted early on October 30 and said he backed Benson because he wants health care costs brought down. "And this gas is ridiculous," he said, blaming Trump and his war in Iran for prices at the pump.

Counting continues in Michigan, where the open U.S. Senate race between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers had not been called. Benson's win gives Democrats the state's top office on a night when their party also won control of the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.
