Updated 12:50 UTC, Oct 22, 2026: Jailer 2 crosses Rs 300 crore in India in seven days, a first-week record for a Tamil film
Sacnilk estimates put Jailer 2 at Rs 317.20 crore India net after seven days, at the end of Wednesday, October 21. Day 7, Wednesday October 21, brought Rs 28.15 crore net in India, down about 40 percent from Day 6 at Rs 46.80 crore.
Worldwide gross stands at Rs 582.45 crore, including an overseas gross of about Rs 211 crore and a domestic gross of Rs 371.45 crore. Sacnilk reported on October 22 that Jailer 2 is the fastest Tamil film to cross Rs 300 crore in India net, doing it in seven days and passing 2.0, Leo and the first Jailer. Filmibeat calls it the highest grossing Tamil film of 2026 so far, and Day 7 shows ran at about 34 percent occupancy across more than 14,000 shows in India.
Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 opened in theatres worldwide on Thursday, and the morning numbers show a star release doing what star releases do in India. The Tamil version filled 80 percent of morning-show seats, according to Chennai trade tracker Ramesh Bala, reported by Variety India. The Telugu version stood at 60 percent and the Hindi version at 25 percent.
Variety India reported the film had collected Rs 18.71 crore on its opening day at the time of its report, with Rs 15.37 crore of that from Tamil, and Kochi and Bengaluru leading occupancy outside Tamil-speaking cities. On that trend, the report said the film was targeting more than Rs 80 crore for its first day.
In Kerala, trade tracker Jerin Georgekutty reported by Filmibeat's live blog said the day-one gross crossed Rs 10.30 crore by 2 p.m., with theatres adding evening and late-night shows, including in rural areas. Filmibeat noted those figures are trade estimates and have not been independently verified.
Fans turned screenings into festivals
The Daily Jagran reported fans dancing, offering prayers, garlanding tall cutouts and setting off firecrackers outside theatres in Chennai and Bengaluru, with full early shows also reported in Dubai, Singapore, Japan, the United States and Canada. Jailer 2 is the first Rajinikanth film to open in India and Japan on the same day, the report said.
Advance sales set the stage. Bollywood Hungama reported 14.15 lakh tickets sold for day one by the afternoon of October 14, and 39,485 tickets for the Hindi version, titled Rajini: The Jailer 2, despite that version not playing in the national multiplex chains.
The film and the cast
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 is the sequel to the 2023 hit Jailer. Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik return, with S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna joining. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff return in cameos, with Hrithik Roshan joining them. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander.
The first day total will firm up overnight as more shows report. The test after that is word of mouth through the weekend.
A big budget sequel with a long memory
The scale behind the opening helps explain the crowds. Variety India reported the film was made on a budget of over Rs 240 crore, produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner. The original Jailer centred on retired police officer Muthuvel Pandian, played by Rajinikanth, protecting his family while taking on a criminal network, and the sequel arrives as a mass action thriller built on that same character.
One casting note drew its own attention. The film marks the reunion of Hrithik Roshan and Rajinikanth after nearly 40 years. The two were seen together in the 1986 film Bhagwan Dada, where Roshan was a child artist. Tamil Nadu led the opening by a wide margin, Variety India said, which fits the pattern of a Rajinikanth release: the home state fills first, the dubbed versions follow, and the overseas centres where fans turned screenings into festivals, from Dubai to Japan, add the second wave of the first day total.
