Houston, Texas: The Galleria Ends Free Parking as New Garage Fees Start November 2
Parking in the Galleria garages in Houston stopped being free on Monday, November 2. Shoppers now pay $2 for up to four hours, $5 for four to seven hours and $25 for up to 24 hours in the Yellow, Brown, Green, Orange and Red garages.
Key points
- Free parking at the Galleria in Houston ended on Monday, November 2.
- The flat rates are $2 for up to four hours, $5 for four to seven hours and $25 for seven to 24 hours.
- Simon Property Group, the mall owner, announced the change last month.
Free parking at the Galleria in Houston ended on Monday, November 2. The shopping center in the Uptown area, the largest mall in Texas, now charges for self-parking in garages that were free for years, and the new rates apply from the first visit under the system.
What shoppers pay now
The flat rates are $2 for up to four hours, $5 for four to seven hours and $25 for seven to 24 hours. The charge is per parking session, not per hour, so a short trip for lunch or a single store now starts at $2, and a full day at the center can reach $25. The change covers the Yellow, Brown, Green, Orange and Red garages. Some express parking areas and valet services at the Galleria already carried a charge, so paid parking itself is not new at the property. What is new is that the ordinary self-parking garage, the option most Houston shoppers used without thinking about it, is no longer free.
Simon Property Group, the mall owner, announced the change last month. "Beginning November 2, The Galleria will introduce a modern parking system designed to provide convenient parking for guests visiting to shop, dine, and enjoy the center," a spokesperson for Simon said in a statement to KHOU, the CBS affiliate in Houston. The statement did not give a detailed reason for introducing the charges, and Simon declined a CultureMap request to comment on the reason or on whether it is concerned the fees could reduce shopper numbers.
Validation, workers and what is still unclear
Select retailers may offer parking validation at their discretion, Simon said. No list of participating stores, spending requirements or validation limits had been announced in the reporting available on Monday, so a shopper who wants validation needs to ask the individual store or restaurant directly. Mall employees will continue to park free in designated areas, and valet parking remains available.
Two practical points were still unclear on the first day. The published time bands overlap at four hours and at seven hours, so drivers should check the posted garage signs for the exact cutoff that applies to their stay. Reporting on the change also did not spell out how drivers pay or whether a short grace period applies to a quick drop-in.
Why the change stands out in Houston
The Galleria covers more than 2 million square feet of leasable space and its stores include Nordstrom, Macy's, Zara and Sephora. It draws shoppers from across the Houston area and visitors from outside the city, and for many of them the free garage was part of the routine of a trip to Uptown. Charging for parking is still uncommon at Houston shopping centers. Memorial City Mall, Sugar Land Town Square and the Simon owned Houston Premium Outlets continue to offer free parking, CultureMap reported, which makes the Galleria the local exception rather than the rule.
For Houston drivers, the practical change starts now, not at some future date. Anyone heading to the Galleria from Monday onward should budget the parking fee into the trip, keep an eye on the clock against the four hour and seven hour bands, and ask about validation before assuming a purchase covers the charge.
