Bethesda Game Studios gave The Elder Scrolls VI its full name on Tuesday. The game will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The title appeared at the end of a video marking 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios, narrated by longtime director Todd Howard, and the studio posted a short name reveal video of its own at the same time.
In the reveal clip, wind blows sand away from an Elder Scroll buried in a desert, and the title forms in cut metal letters. No gameplay was shown. Bethesda announced no release date, no release window and no platforms.
A name that points at Hammerfell
The reveal carried one passage of in-world text, attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, and dated 4E 206, five years after the events of Skyrim. It reads: "The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate."
Sentinel is a city and kingdom in Hammerfell, the desert province west of Skyrim and home of the Redguards. In a post on X after the video, Bethesda said it had revealed the name and the location together. The confirmation matches a report by The Verge on October 29, which said the Sentinel subtitle would be announced in November, around the 15th anniversary of Skyrim.
Eight years since the first teaser
Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 in 2018, with a short teaser that showed a coastline and mountains and little else. Almost nothing about the game has been shared since. Skyrim, the last main entry in the series, came out on November 11, 2011, and its 15th anniversary falls next week, on November 11.
Bethesda says work on the game continues, but fans should not expect details soon. "Development continues, and while it will be some time before we are ready to share more, it feels great to finally reveal the name and location with you," the studio said in its post. Xbox chief Asha Sharma had teased the subtitle in August, replacing it with eight asterisks in a post after she saw an internal demonstration of the game, IGN reported.
For players, Tuesday's news settles the name and the setting and nothing else. The wait for gameplay, platforms and a release window goes on.
