Harriet Dart won the first WTA Tour title of her career on Sunday, beating Lilli Tagger 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the Guangzhou Open final. Dart, a 30 year old British qualifier ranked No. 115, was playing her first WTA final. She lost the first set, then took the next two to close out the match in 2 hours and 16 minutes.
Dart converted five of her 11 break points in the final. Tagger, 18, was the fourth seed and is ranked No. 53. The Austrian was chasing a second WTA title after winning in Prague earlier this season, and she was the first Austrian player to reach the Guangzhou final.
A week of three set matches
Dart reached the title match the hard way. After coming through qualifying, she beat Tatiana Prozorova 6-4 2-6 6-2, second seed Janice Tjen 6-4 3-6 6-3 and fifth seed Paula Badosa 3-6 6-2 6-4. In the semifinal she beat 16 year old wildcard Sun Xinran 5-7 7-6 (1) 6-0. Every match went three sets, and Dart had spent 9 hours and 27 minutes on court before the final.
After the semifinal, Dart said the run already meant a great deal to her. "I wanted it so much, sometimes too much, but to finally be here, be in the final, means the world," she said.
First British winner in Guangzhou
The title makes Dart the first British player to win the Guangzhou tournament. The best previous British result was Laura Robson's run to the final in 2012. Dart is also the first qualifier to win the event since Li Na won the first edition in 2004. Before this week, her best result at Tour level was a semifinal in Cluj-Napoca in 2024, and her career high ranking is No. 70, reached in September 2024.
Revenge for Fujairah, and a strong run by Tagger
Sunday's final was a rematch of the pair's only previous meeting, the final of a W100 event in Fujairah in February, which Tagger won 6-4 6-2. Tagger, the 2025 Roland Garros junior champion, reached the Guangzhou final by beating Venus Williams 6-2 6-2, Magda Linette 6-2 6-2, Shi Han 6-4 3-6 7-5 and Kaitlin Quevedo 6-2 6-0 in the semifinal.
The Guangzhou Open is a WTA 250 event played on outdoor hard courts at the Nansha International Tennis Center. This year's tournament ran from October 24 to November 1, with a total financial commitment of 283,347 dollars.
