IOWA CITY, Iowa (Orbit Post) Democrat Christina Bohannan defeated Republican U.S. Rep. At that point Bohannan led 165,237 votes to 131,832, with 17 of 20 counties reporting, according to the Iowa Secretary of State.
NBC News called the race for Bohannan at 12:06 a.m. ET on November 4, and the Associated Press called it at 12:08 a.m. ET. The Washington Examiner reported Bohannan at 53.5 percent to 42.8 percent for Miller-Meeks, with 90 percent of the vote counted at the time of the AP call. In the AP results feed snapshot read on election night, Bohannan had 174,284 votes to 139,222 for Miller-Meeks, with 92.35 percent of precincts reporting and an estimated 93.05 percent of the vote counted.
The count on election night
The Des Moines Register reported that NBC News and Decision Desk HQ called the race just after 11 p.m. CT on November 3. Unofficial results from the Iowa Secretary of State's office at that stage showed Bohannan at 53 percent to 42 percent for Miller-Meeks, with 89 percent of votes counted. A third candidate, Bridgford, had 4 percent in those unofficial results.
The margins in the different snapshots moved as more votes were counted, but the order never changed. Bohannan led in the first projection of the night, in the network calls after midnight Eastern time, and in the AP feed snapshot.
Third matchup between the two
This was Bohannan's third race against Miller-Meeks. She fell short in 2022 and again in 2024. The 2024 race was close in a way few House races are: Miller-Meeks won it by fewer than 800 votes. That result set up another two years of campaigning in the same district, between the same two candidates, and this time Bohannan finished ahead by a margin counted in tens of thousands of votes.
The district
The 1st District covers 20 counties in southeast Iowa. It includes Davenport, Iowa City, Keokuk, Indianola, Newton and Clinton. Bohannan celebrated her victory at a watch party at Big Grove in Iowa City, in a Des Moines Register live entry timestamped 12:57 a.m. ET on November 4. Miller-Meeks conceded, according to the Register's district report.
