A man walking in a marked crosswalk in Bakersfield was hit by a car and killed on Sunday evening, police said.

The crash happened at California Avenue and Business Center Drive, just north of Stockdale Highway. Bakersfield police responded at 6:32 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, according to the Bakersfield Police Department account of the crash.

What police say happened

Detectives determined that the man was walking westbound in the marked crosswalk when a driver in a southbound Toyota Prius hit him, police said. The Bakersfield Fire Department responded and confirmed the man's death at the scene.

Police have not released the man's name. Reports on Monday did not identify him, and police gave no age for him in the account carried by local outlets.

The driver stopped

The driver of the Prius stopped and cooperated with investigators, police said. It was not known whether impairment was a factor in the crash, according to the police account. Police announced no arrest in the reports published on Monday.

KGET 17, the NBC affiliate in Bakersfield, reported the death on Monday in its local coverage, matching the police account carried in the first detailed report of the crash.

Police want video and witnesses

Investigators are asking for help from anyone who saw the crash or has footage of it. Witnesses, and anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage from the area around California Avenue and Business Center Drive on Sunday evening, can contact the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111.

The death came at the end of a hard Halloween weekend on Bakersfield roads. Local outlets counted several fatal crashes and shootings across the city over the weekend, and California Avenue is one of the wide commercial roads where police regularly work serious pedestrian crashes. For the people who cross it on foot near Stockdale Highway, Sunday's crash is the part that matters: a man in a marked crosswalk did not make it across.

Police have not said how fast the Prius was traveling, whether the driver will face any charge, or when the man's name will be released. The investigation is ongoing.

A day later, still no name

By Monday, the public record of the crash was still the short police account: a time, an intersection, a direction of travel, a car model and a driver who stayed. There was no name, no age, no speed estimate and no statement about lights or signals at the crossing. That thin record is why the witness appeal matters. One dashcam clip from California Avenue at dinner time on Sunday could answer the questions the police account leaves open, and investigators have asked anyone who has one to call it in.
