Updated 00:49 UTC, Oct 20, 2026. The City of Wichita said on Oct 19, 2026 that Public Works and Utilities crews began installing temporary barriers at key locations around Stryker Sports Complex, while the Wichita Police Department, Public Works and Utilities, Parks and Recreation and Stryker management carry out an initial security assessment of the facility. The barriers will stay in place until more permanent solutions can be implemented, the city said. The facility reopened at 3 p.m. on Oct 19, 2026, and specific programming information will be posted on the Stryker Facebook page. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community and that officers will be present at the facility this coming weekend. Sedgwick County COMCARE staff will be on site from Monday through Wednesday, from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., for anyone seeking mental health help for themselves or their children, the city said.
Updated 22:23 UTC, Oct 19, 2026. Wichita police will give Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett an initial case presentation sometime early this week, the district attorney's office said on Oct 19, 2026. "Following that initial case review, our office will share information as appropriate," spokesperson Lyndsee Stover told USA Today. Police spokesman Andrew Ford said police had not yet received the toxicology report or information from the examination of the vehicle, and that whether the woman was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash or the vehicle was moving on its own is part of the investigation and would not be released. No charges have been filed.
Updated 21:36 UTC, Oct 18, 2026. Wichita police released the driver from custody on Sunday, a day after her pickup drove onto a youth soccer field at Stryker Sports Complex and killed two people. Investigators consulted the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office and released the 34-year-old woman pending toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the vehicle, police said. No charges have been filed.
Police named the two people killed as Cole Adrian, age 6, and Nicholas Schafer, age 35, both of McPherson. The pickup had been parked in a space near the soccer fields before it drove onto one of the fields, according to the preliminary investigation. Ten people were taken to Wichita hospitals with injuries police described as noncritical, and another woman was taken to a hospital after medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries. Police said investigators interviewed more than 30 witnesses, including the two juveniles who were inside the pickup, before interviewing the driver and releasing her. The woman had another child playing soccer on a different field at the complex. Police asked anyone with video of the incident to share it with investigators. "What should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together ended in tragedy," Police Chief Joe Sullivan said in a statement.

Police have given more detail about the people killed and injured. The 6-year-old boy and the 35-year-old man were both from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related, Capt. Aaron Moses said at the evening briefing on Oct 17, 2026. Their names have not been released. The driver is a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. Police said she held a valid license and had no warrants. She is in custody and has been cooperative, and police said they will work with the district attorney to decide whether charges are appropriate.
Of the 11 people taken to hospitals, 10 had traumatic injuries, police said. They were five children, a 5-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, two 8-year-old boys and a 9-year-old girl, and five adults, a 28-year-old woman, a 32-year-old man, a 59-year-old woman, a 65-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man. The 11th person, a 61-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital for a non-traumatic medical issue. Police said the traumatic injuries ranged from bruises to extremely severe, and none was believed to be life threatening.
Detectives have interviewed more than 30 witnesses, police said, and will review surveillance video from the complex. Police asked anyone who took video or photos at the complex on Saturday to submit them to investigators. "Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita," Mayor Lily Wu said. "Families came to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon, watching their children play soccer and no one could have imagined the tragedy that would unfold." In McPherson, Mayor Jim Loving said: "Tonight McPherson is grieving."

Police have now given the ages of the two people killed and a count of the injured. The boy who died was 6 years old and the man was 35, Capt. Aaron Moses said. They were not related to each other, and both were pronounced dead at the scene. Eleven other people were taken to hospitals. Police said 10 of the injured had traumatic injuries believed to be non-life threatening, and the injured include children.
The driver is a 34-year-old woman, Moses said. Her own child was playing soccer on a different field at the complex, and two juveniles were inside her vehicle. She is in custody and has been cooperative with investigators, police said. Officers are still working to determine what happened and why, and whether charges will be filed.
All events at Stryker Sports Complex have been canceled until further notice, the facility said. The Kansas State High School Activities Association said the flag football third place and championship games were suspended until a later date, with details to be announced on Monday, Oct 19, 2026.
Two people, a child and an adult, were killed on Saturday afternoon when a vehicle drove onto a soccer field during a game at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas. Several other people were injured and taken to hospitals. The driver was taken into custody, and police said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Sedgwick County dispatchers received multiple 911 calls at about 3:25 p.m. local time reporting that a vehicle had driven through a soccer game, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said at a news briefing. The Wichita Police Department said on X that it was investigating a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle.
What witnesses saw
A witness told local station KWCH that a black pickup truck drove through the youth soccer fields, striking multiple people before stopping about 100 to 200 yards farther down the fields. The witness described dozens of emergency responders giving medical help at the scene, including CPR. Families and children were on the field when it happened, witnesses told the station.
Moses said two juveniles were inside the vehicle when it drove through the complex. The vehicle remained at the scene. Police officers, other local law enforcement agencies, the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS all responded.
What police do not know yet
Police have not released the names of the two people who died, and they were working to notify their families. In the later briefing, Moses gave their ages, a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man who were not related, and said 11 other people were injured.
Moses said it was not yet clear how fast the vehicle was traveling or how it got onto the field. Authorities had not confirmed whether the driver acted intentionally. The complex is fenced, with a concrete route leading to a parking lot, KWCH reported.
Games were suspended at a flag football state championship being played on an adjacent field at the complex while police worked at the scene, the Kansas State High School Activities Association said in a statement.
The Stryker complex is a large city sports site in northeast Wichita, with several indoor and outdoor fields that host youth soccer games and tournaments on weekends. Saturday afternoon games draw players, coaches and parents from across the area, and the fields were busy when the calls came in.
