Kirill Kaprizov scored his NHL-leading 14th goal of the season and added an assist on Tuesday night, October 27, as the Minnesota Wild beat the Utah Mammoth 3-1 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
Jesper Wallstedt stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced for Minnesota. Logan Cooley scored with 1:21 left to play to spoil Wallstedt's shutout bid, on a night when Utah had the chances to make the game closer but could not beat the Wild goaltender until the final minutes.
Both Minnesota power-play goals counted
Joel Eriksson Ek opened the scoring on the power play with less than five minutes left in the first period. Kaprizov doubled the lead on another power play just 48 seconds into the second period, giving Minnesota a 2-0 lead it protected for most of the night. Maxim Shabanov also scored for the Wild, and Quinn Hughes finished with two assists.
Kaprizov now has multiple points in three straight games and a goal in eight of his last nine games. His 14 goals lead the league, and the Associated Press reported that he is tied with Alex Ovechkin for the fifth-most goals scored in the month of October in NHL history. Eriksson Ek has eight points, three goals and five assists, in his last seven games.
Where the two teams stand
Karel Vejmelka made 27 saves for Utah. The Mammoth have lost three of their last five games, a run that has cost them ground in the Central Division race that brought the top two teams in the division together on Tuesday night. Minnesota has now won three straight games and finished its five-game road trip at 3-1-1.
The road does not get easier for Utah. The Mammoth open a six-game road trip at Pittsburgh on Thursday night, October 29, and will not play at the Delta Center again until that trip ends. Minnesota returns home to face the New York Islanders on Thursday night.
For Salt Lake City fans, the loss was the kind that turns on special teams. Utah gave up two power-play goals in the first 21 minutes, spent the rest of the night chasing a two-goal game, and got its only goal too late to change the result. The Mammoth will need a cleaner start in Pittsburgh to stop the slide before the long trip stretches it further.
