The original report, covering the early finals, follows.

Four early finals are in the books from Thursday night in the NHL, and the Detroit Red Wings gave their home crowd the loudest finish. Detroit beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 at Little Caesars Arena, with Viktor Arvidsson scoring a hat trick on the day the club learned captain Dylan Larkin wants a trade.

Chicago scored first through Connor Bedard, his fourth goal of the season. Detroit answered with four straight goals. Lucas Raymond scored his fourth of the season a minute into the third period to put the Red Wings ahead, a goal set up by Arvidsson less than a minute after Raymond drew a penalty from former Red Wing Patrick Kane. Arvidsson added an insurance goal late and completed the hat trick, the sixth of his career, into an empty net at 16:45 of the third. His three goals took his season total to eight. Chicago fell to 0-5-0 on the road, while Detroit reached 15 points through 13 games at 6-4-3.

Utah wins a wild one in overtime

The Utah Mammoth beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime after giving up a late lead in regulation. Mikhail Sergachev scored the winner in the extra period off a pass from Barrett Hayton. Flashscore called it one of the craziest games of the young season, and it gave Utah a road win on a night when the Penguins pushed the game past 60 minutes.

Carolina holds off Columbus

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 in Raleigh. Jordan Martinook opened the scoring with 4:09 left in the first period, Logan Stankoven made it 2-0 at 7:47 of the second, and Mark Jankowski scored 16 seconds into the third for a 3-0 lead. Columbus answered fast. Denton Mateychuk scored at 6:56 of the third, extending his goal streak to three games, and Kent Johnson scored his seventh of the season on a power play at 9:50. Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 24 shots and set a franchise record with his ninth straight win to start a season, breaking the mark he had shared with Frederik Andersen. Seth Jarvis had two assists. Carolina improved to 11-2-2 with 24 points, eight clear of New Jersey atop the Metropolitan Division. Jet Greaves made 24 saves for Columbus, which is 5-6-0 and finishes its road trip on October 31 in Dallas.

Tampa Bay survives a Jets rally

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Winnipeg Jets 6-4 at home after leading 5-1 through two periods. Winnipeg scored three times in the third, and Kyle Connor scored with three minutes left to keep the pressure on, before Tampa Bay closed the game with an empty net goal. Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel each had three-point nights. The Lightning improved to 8-3-1 and stayed perfect at home at 6-0-0. Winnipeg fell to 4-6-3.

What it means

Carolina owns the best record in the league through Thursday's early games and keeps winning close ones. Detroit won on a day dominated by the Larkin trade request, and Arvidsson's eight goals have carried the offense early. The late games in Minnesota and Nashville are covered in the update at the top of this report.
