Why San Francisco is favored

The 49ers have yet to lose through five games, and quarterback Brock Purdy has looked like an early MVP candidate under coach Kyle Shanahan, USA Today reported. The return of linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw has helped the defense rank third in scoring and sixth in total yards through the first five weeks. Oddsmakers list San Francisco as a 7.5 point favorite.

San Francisco shares the best record in football with Kansas City and Minnesota, and it comes in off a hard fought division win over the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers have kept winning even with injuries thinning out the wide receiver room, leaning on veteran Mike Evans, tight end George Kittle and a defense that gets contributions from everywhere.

What Washington needs

The Commanders have starting quarterback Jayden Daniels back from injury, and they arrive off a 27-27 tie with the New York Giants. Their offense ranks 16th in the NFL in scoring, but their defense has been one of the league's worst: 23rd in yards allowed at 350.4 per game and last in scoring defense, USA Today reported. Washington is 0-2 in true road games this season, and a win tonight would change the mood around its season before a Week 7 bye.

Washington will be without running back Bill Croskey-Merritt, but its top two wide receivers are expected back after hamstring injuries, and the team planned to activate cornerback Trey Amos and running back Jeremy McNichols from injured reserve, Hogs Haven reported. Coach Dan Quinn's team made a series of mistakes on the final drive of overtime against the Giants, and it needs a clean game from Daniels to have a chance in Santa Clara.

How Week 6 got here

The Sunday slate closed with Green Bay beating Dallas 23-13 on Sunday night. Tonight's game is the final word on the week, and a sixth straight San Francisco win would keep the 49ers as the NFC's last unbeaten team.

How it finished

San Francisco won 23-17, but only after a scare. The 49ers led 20-3 at halftime and 23-3 late in the third quarter, with Purdy throwing for 264 yards and Christian McCaffrey running for two touchdowns. Daniels then threw two touchdown passes as Washington outgained San Francisco 224 to 72 in the second half and cut the lead to six points. The Commanders reached the San Francisco 28 in the final minute, but Daniels was sacked on the last snap. San Francisco moves to 6-0 and plays at Atlanta on Sunday, October 25. Washington falls to 1-4-1.
