Birmingham, Alabama: Bank of America to Open Its First Alabama Centers in Birmingham and Huntsville in Early 2027

Key points

  • Bank of America will open its first financial centers in Alabama early next year, the bank announced on Wednesday, October 28.
  • The announcement came as the bank opened its first centers in Wisconsin, in Madison and Milwaukee, this month.
  • Holly O'Neill, the bank's president of consumer, retail and preferred banking, told Reuters the bank is still expanding its branch network in person.

Bank of America will open its first financial centers in Alabama early next year, the bank announced on Wednesday, October 28. The plan calls for 10 centers across Birmingham and Huntsville beginning in the first quarter of 2027, part of a national build-out of about 50 new centers a year.

The announcement came as the bank opened its first centers in Wisconsin, in Madison and Milwaukee, this month. Bank of America plans 19 centers across Wisconsin through 2030, creating nearly 130 jobs there. Greater New Orleans follows Alabama in the expansion, with eight centers planned beginning in the second half of 2027, the bank's first in Louisiana.

Why Birmingham and Huntsville

Holly O'Neill, the bank's president of consumer, retail and preferred banking, told Reuters the bank is still expanding its branch network in person. "We continue to strategically enhance and expand our branch network, really trying to reach more of the US population," O'Neill said. "We choose these markets based on their growth dynamics, their population, and our opportunity to grow the business," she said.

Chief Executive Brian Moynihan made the same point in the bank's announcement. "Our clients do more and more of their banking digitally, but when they're buying a home, starting a business or planning for retirement, they want to sit down with someone they trust," Moynihan said. "That's why we keep building. Each new financial center in Wisconsin, Alabama and Louisiana is a commitment to the clients, employees and communities we serve there."

What the centers will offer

The bank says more than 95 percent of its client interactions now happen on its digital platform, but customers still book in-person appointments for larger decisions. Over the past year, clients made about 10 million appointments with specialists at its centers, and nearly 20 percent of those appointments were with financial solutions advisors.

"A financial center is more than a place to bank. It's a place where clients can meet with a specialist, talk through their goals and get personalized guidance for what comes next," O'Neill said in the announcement.

The wider build-out

Bank of America operates about 3,500 financial centers nationwide, reaching about 83 percent of the US population, and about 30 percent of its centers sit in low and moderate income communities. The company has opened about 200 new centers in 17 expansion markets since 2014 and has invested more than $5 billion in its network since 2016. It has completed more than 400 renovation projects this year, with more than 300 additional projects planned in the coming months, and plans more than 30 new centers across 22 markets in the coming months.

The bank did not announce street addresses or local hiring figures for the Birmingham and Huntsville centers on Wednesday. In September 2025, the bank raised its US minimum hourly wage to $25 an hour for full-time and part-time employees. Birmingham and Huntsville customers who now use the bank digitally, or travel to centers in other states, would get their first in-person Bank of America locations in Alabama when the centers begin opening in early 2027.
